Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
24 April 2006

As requested, my listing for 10m now includes CW as well as SSB and FM. I’m not aware of any AM on 10, is anyone? The inclusion of CW will make the lists bigger but will give a more realistic indication of activity. It’s just not a mode that I’m interested in, some of you are though!!

Sunday's map

I have my doubts about some of the YVs and YXs although YX0LIX is genuine and has a sad story attached to it.

On April 20, 2006, the Aves Island 2006 DXpedition, YX0A, initiated its transmissions and several hours later, the 80 meter SSB and digital operator Jose Valdes YV5LIX suffered a severe heart attack that took away his life. The dream of any DXer to be in a DXCC country DXpedition had been accomplished.

His team mates decided continue the DXpedition in his honour, using the callsign YX0LIX under the immediate approval of the Venezuelan National Commission of Telecommunications officers present in the DXpedition. His body was airlifted by helicopter to the frigate and transported to Caracas.
What can you say!

9W2YCC, YC Chan, sent in a report too late for my last bulletin so I’ll include it now. “Since 28 March 06 I noticed some propagation between UTC 1400 - 1800hr. Normally, propagation starts between 0400-1900hr.” He heard VK4FTDX 3/3 QSB, UN7GN 5/5 QSB, RN6BL 5/5

Denis, F4EYE, says “With a dipole antenna in V inverted only. No QSB, good signal. 15:16 UTC 22nd April good open on South America and Africa with TZ9A heard RS: 52”. Denis also worked LU1FHH on CW.

Contests:
This weekend is the Swiss (Helvetica) contest 13:00 Saturday to 13:00 Sunday. Nothing else.

Sun:
Mini sunspot 875 seems like it’s not going to cause us any problems. However, things are happening. For the third day in a row, astronomers have been monitoring a string of prominences.

"The way they sprouted from the edge of the Sun made them look like trees," says Larry Alvarez of Flower Mound, Texas, who took this picture yesterday:

Solar prominences are among the most entertaining targets for amateur astronomers. They've been known to impersonate trees, giant broccoli, dinosaurs, sea monsters and even spaceships.

I spent a pleasant week in Cuba, no radio activity, well almost none. I could hear several Cuban stations proudly relaying the events of 40 years ago regarding the Bay of Pigs invasion by the imperialist forces of USA.

Contrast that with the two Florida radio stations broadcasting the most inane drivel that I have ever heard. Most of the time it was three guys making silly noises and laughing at each other.

I did get to see bee humming birds in the trees and lots of curly tailed lizards.
