Sunday's map

As can be seen 4O3T, the Montenegro Expedition, has been very active, not just on 10m, but on all bands. Up to last Saturday their logs show 4711 contacts on Ten Metres with 3097 being SSB and 1614 CW. They could run for a while yet.

G0FTD, Andy’s back in form. He says “I went down the beach with my FT817 and homebrew 24 inch rubber duck to give it a proper test. (I'm now interested in pedestrian portable operating to see what I can achieve). Worked CS2T (think that was his callsign, Madera and a couple of Spanish stations on SSB. Dead easy to work. Was very surprised for 5w and a rubber duck. I wound it on one of those luminous plastic garden sticks ;-) Great fun!”

Stef from somewhere in England asks, “Listening to a Spanish station on 28.462MHz. I'd like to listen for more 10m activity. The band is pretty wide, is there an "activity" frequency or good range to listen in?”

28.490 MHz is generally recognised as the calling frequency. There has been some discussion about this, in particular about moving off it so as to leave it free for others to call on. 28.400 to 28.600 for SSB, 29.600 for fm, and there is certainly some fm activity. But it has to be said that habits vary from location to location.

Contests:
This weekend 00:00 5th August to 24:00 6th August is th 10-10 International Summer QSO Party. As the major 10m Group in the world it should generate a lot of stateside activity. We also have the European HF Championship from Saturday 12:00 to 24:00 and SARL HF Contest from 14:30 to 18:30 on Sunday.

Sun:
Spots 901 and 902 pose no threat at all.
The Perseid meteor shower doesn't peak until August 12th but the display has already begun. Meteor rates, now low, will increase in the days ahead as Earth plunges into the broad tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. More "direct hits" are on the way.

The inflatable Genesis satellite is orbiting Earth and starting to make conspicuous evening passes over North America. It glows about as brightly as a 3rd-magnitude star.

On July 28th, Kevin Fetter videotaped Genesis passing over his home in Brockville, Ontario, Canada. 2 MB movie
