As you can see it was not a good week in general, even the weekend was
not special despite the IOTA contest (which ‘TUT did not listen
to).
'Le weekend' as the French say, had a total of 530 stations with 3 or
more contacts on 10m phone, 66 were 00:00 to 12:00 Saturday, 390 were12:00
to 12:00 Sunday and 74 were 12:00 to 24:00 Sunday. So IOTA did drag a
few stations on.
Good to see Wales top-listed on Thursday courtesy of Steve MW0ZZK, the
lad’s been about a bit. Also good to see the various sections of
the British Isles represented via GM, MI, MJ and the rather cute call
M8C. This is the Cray Valley Radio Society
which meets twice a month in Eltham , London SE9. This call sign is one
of two G calls that the club holds, the other being G1RCV. They hold the
short call M8C for contesting purposes, and it has been used in the IOTA
Contests for the last four years from EU11 St Mary's Isle, Isles of Scilly.
Contests: NRAU Thursday, and the European HF Contest
12:00 to 24:00 Saturday. This is European to European only so we hope
for shortish skip. Unfortunately unless they’ve changed the rules
the SARL HF contest doesn’t cover 10m. Why not? It would have filled
in Sunday afternoon quite nicely.
Sun: El sol está blanco. Well not really as blanco
is the Spanish for white, but you’ll get the drift, no spots.
A severe dust storm on Mars, raging for the fourth consecutive week, is
putting Spirit and Opportunity in jeopardy. Both rovers rely on stored
solar power to keep critical systems warm during the cold martian night,
but dust is blotting out the sun. The temperature of Opportunity's core
has dropped to minus 37 Celsius, a near-critical level, according to NASA
engineers.
There's
no escaping the storm; it stretches all the way around the planet. From
high orbit, Mars Odyssey has mapped out the atmospheric opacity:
In the figure, blue denotes clear air while red is choked with dust. Global
warming reaches Mars?? It’s a bummer.
And that’s almost it. Just a short note from Matt, VK8MAT,
(I wonder if he has a cherished car plate as well?) to say
“The VK8VF 10m beacon in Darwin is back up and running. Power is
approximately 25W into a 1/4 wave vertical on 28.268 MHz.
For those interested, the 6m beacon is also back up on 50.310 MHz using
10W into a 1/4 wave vertical.”
