Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
10 January 2007
Last Friday, Saturday and Sunday were unbelievably poor.
New Year’s day and the Tuesday were OK with 1A4A
winning the prize for the rest of the week.
1A4A is the call of the Sovereign
Military Order of Malta. Quote, “With the activity of the amateur
radio station 1A4A we want to support a specific project of the Italian
Association of The Order of Malta ( ACISMOM ).” This is to contribute
to build a girls middle school in Sudan. They also have an American Association.
Their web site is http://www.1a4a.org/dblog/
It was also good to see many more Europeans in the lists. This unfortunately
means in all probability very short skip so they were working each other.
No matter, any activity is better that none!
Uwe, DG1RUG, reports that he heard 9K2PL 5/5
and 5N8NDP 4/5. He also says “5N8NDP mix es low TEP+MS-burst.”
Perhaps Uwe would like to give us the low down on what he means and the
equipment he uses for this.
Barry, M0NOK, in Leeds, UK heard I5KAP/QRP/5/9+.
His comment was, “I worked Frank with 5W and he gave me a 5/9 report
them 10 minutes later I worked him with 500mW”. I’m glad to
see QRP is still alive. It does kind of show the European skip of last
weekend.
And then again N3ZPO, Frank, responded with
this late, but useful, ARRL CW contest report. ”During ARRL 10 Meter
Contest on 9/10 December 2006, following calls were good CW QSOs for me:
K4ZA, NY3A,K3SWZ, K4FJ,W0EWD,KR5V, W0BH, KG0UA, W5MK,KT0K, W0JPL,K3WW,
WE3C, W5LE, N0AT, KY5N, N3II, K5NZ, K0HA, K0DEQ, WX3B, N2MM, K9WZB,K6AM,
W7ZR,W0YK, KA6BIM, KY7M, W7YS,K8IA, W6RLL, N2IC, NT6X, K7CA, K6NR, K2LNS,W7SW,KQ6ES,
K4RO, K0RC, WD9DZV, WA2MNO, K9DU, AC0W, W0AIH, KF3B, AA3B, and K5SO.”
He explains “I believe 10-meters is much better than it seems. If
more stations would keep pounding brass on 10-meters, good QSOs are possible
and 10-meters is "not dead."
Frank adds: "I call CQ on 10-meters via the CW mode, every day. Let
me know if you want to try hearing my call at a specific date/time.”

Is the place to look if you’re interested. You also have to send
the outside temperature!!
Sun:
3 sunspots just visible, 933, 937 and 930. None are likely to
cause strong solar flares.
Comet
McNaught however is easily visible, naked eye and you’re not going
to toast your retina. When the sun sets tonight, go outside immediately
and look west. You may see the brightest comet in thirty years hanging
just above the horizon.
"What a beautiful sight! Last night, comet McNaught (C/2006 P1)
was easily visible to the naked eye and even more stunning in 10x50 binoculars,"
reports Chris Cook of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. "The star-like nucleus
glowed with a golden hue as a broad elegant tail extended more than one
degree".
Comet McNaught is plunging toward the sun, and the heat is causing it
to brighten dramatically. A few days ago, it was barely visible in evening
twilight, but now it pops into view while the sky is still glowing blue.
Only Venus is brighter.
If you have trouble finding the comet (because of clouds or glare) scan
the horizon with binoculars.
That’s it for this week. Oh, I almost forgot, the cricket. We also
got whipped in the 20/20 by the Aussies. And that a game they are just
starting at. Doh!!
