KG4YEV, Bruce, (I thought Bruce was exclusively an Australian name), new to Ten Metres, says,
“New setup trying 10M. I can hear a faint CW sig on 28.5. I have this awful loud ticking noise on 10M using my FT-847”.

Unusual to get CW (tappy stuff) on 28.500 MHz, it’s mostly below 28.350 (tappy band). About the ticking noise, could be anything, from a thermostat to an electric motor. Saturday and Sunday are the best days to listen or better still to call CQ.

FURA, SK2AT, (SKs are club stations and FURA are the club initials) heard this lot last Thursday, SE2T 59, OH6UK 59, SM2SUM 59, OH6A 59, F5IHP 57, 9A3LM 59, S50J 59, G4DYO 59, PA1RJ 59, CT2JHU 59, M5AFD 59, DO3NKM 59, SM3SHJ 55, G4VXT 59, G0SXC 59, DH3JZ 59, DH3JZ 55, G1FOF 59, EA1KY 59, G4EZT 59.
Good to see us Gs are getting in on the act. He says,
“NAC (Nordic activity contest) NRAU first Thursday in the month on SSB 2000-2100 Swedish time. That’s 17z summer and 18z winter. First CW one hour, then SSB, then FM and last hour digimode. Usually 28120 psk. 73 Per/SM2LIY.”
Thanks Per, I do keep giving it a plug. I personally found Thursday and Friday very active here in the UK, hence I even made it into the Thursday list.

Contests: This weekend we have the IARU HF World Championship from 12:00 Saturday to 12:00 Sunday. Should be good.
KL7, Alaska, will be activated from Ushagat Island from 12th to 17th July for IOTA. PJ2HQ Island of Curacao should be active 14th – 15th July. VP2V, Br Virgin Islands, will also be on that time.

Ten-Ten magazine has a good article on the incursion of truckers/CBers into the 10 metre band mainly on 28.085 MHz but elsewhere as well. The nub of the article is “use or lose”, even if conditions are bad for DX.

Sun: Spot 963 is decaying, so that’s that then. This photo was taken on board a plane by Doc Searls and shows the Aurora Borealis, what a fantastic show that must have been.

Early notification of the upcoming Perseid meteor shower on the night of the 12th – 13th August.

The moon will be new so conditions should be good. Lets hope for clear skies.
