Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
17 July, 2007

Hands up all those who have a car registration plate which is also their callsign. I can’t see why anyone would bother. It hardly enhances the value of the car, most folk won’t know what it is.

And to anyone who does know it means there will be valuable kit in the vehicle and makes it more likely that it will be broken in to. They are called “Cherished plates” here in the UK but elsewhere they are known as “Vanity plates”.

I’ve got a feeling, looking at the lists above, that the sunspot cycle as well as a eleven year cycle also has a 7-day cycle such that it peaks on Saturday!

GB7HQ done good in the contest, top Sunday and near the top Saturday. And so it should, it is the RSGB’s station. During the week, of which Thursday and Friday were so poor they shall escape mention, G0SXC managed a top on Tuesday and MW0HMV heard twice as much DX as any other station on Sunday. What happened to 1A0KM on Sunday? Even I worked him on Friday and he was well out front on Saturday but not there on Sunday?

Of 1313 contacts on Saturday 670 were on phone i.e. 51%. On Sunday of 858 contacts 425 were phone i.e. 49.5%. So who said CW was dead, not me, I just don’t find it easy or comfortable. All the above lists are just for phone contacts.

Mike VE2TH sent me a list via the 10m Google group of beacons that he’s heard in June. I won’t reproduce that list here as it is kind of out of date now but he does end with a nice phrase, “Stay tuned and see you on the EXOTIC BAND!!!”. Yes I like that one. Its also time to remind you all that the beacons on 28.200 to 28.300 MHz approx. are a good indicator of conditions to a particular location. They say that 10m is always open to somewhere but at the moment that can often be the middle of the Atlantic. So can’t we train fish to use 10m rigs? No prizes for the best (real or false) fishy call signs.

Contests: Nothing until the IOTA contest at the end of the month.

Sun: Decaying sunspot 963 poses no threat for strong solar flares.

And that’s about it for this week. The smoking ban is two weeks old and pubs are now redecorating to get rid of the yellow grime effect most of them had. And England v India Test Match starts at Lords on Thursday, with probably the weather as the greatest challenge.
