Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
18 May 2006

This week has been a busy one for me. Teaching has not yet finished for the exam season but timetabling for next year has started. Add to that software problems with the timetable programme which I can show was OK last year, and a full day at court today and you can see why this week’s report is late and short.

I have cut out the cw section from each day. It was taking too long to compile and too much space on the web pages. All the following were on frequencies above 28.300 MHz

Sunday's map

Contests:
Not much this weekend, Portuguese Navy Day 15:00 Saturday to 15:00 Sunday. The rest small fry really.

Sun:
Absolutely no sun spots!! However a giant flame-shaped prominence jumped up over the edge of the sun yesterday.
Jack Newton of Osoyoos, British Columbia, took its picture.

Note the gap at the bottom of the flame?
Our entire planet could fit through it with room to spare.
No wonder prominences are so easy to see; they're huge. This one is still flickering even today. Prominences may look like flames, but they are not fire. The flame-like shapes are formed by magnetic force fields holding clouds of hydrogen above the limb of the sun. Combustion has nothing to do with it
