DX Spots Popup
Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
24 May 2007
What a strange week it was. Very active Tuesday, Thursday
and Sunday with the other days much less so.
Again on the active days I’ve had to restrict the
lists to 5 or more contacts. Those eagle eyed ones amongst you will see
even I managed to get a place. No prizes for spotting which day.
The weather is just as variable. Monday I went to Lord’s
to see England scrunch the W’Indies, but no. Dull, then rain, then
drizzle, then rain then dull, dull. Chris Gayle was getting into his stride
but after 8 overs, rain. Then we were back and forth. They just got in
enough overs so we couldn’t have all our money back. But honestly
it was very bad light. Then Tuesday and Wednesday were fantastic, hot
and dry with clear blue sky.

Alan, N5XZ heard YV5DTJ 5/9, VK2HV 5/8 on SSB and 6Y5PF
5/9, HI7NJA 5/9, E51QMA 599, and YV5EU 579 on CW. He says “Incredible
10 meter activity for the last few weeks! Let's hope it keeps up. I am
running 1500W and a 4 el SteppIR at 70 ft.”
Yes I always say 1.5 kW and 4 elements is better than 100W and a Windom.
(Jealousy oozing out).
Peter, 2E0VTS, was also in on the action. He worked
IN3ZNR 5/9, F5MSB 5/8, PY2CX 5/9, IV3IHF 5/9, OK4TO 5/9, G0GQK 5/9, S51RS
5/9, S59DKR 5/7, S51GL 5/5, 9A950DX 5/?. His antenna is a little more
modest, quote “All Stations heard and easily worked on 20m dipole
at 30ft”.
Good, shows it can be done
Contests: This weekend we have CQ WW WPX 00:00 Saturday
to 24:00 Sunday, but only the CW section. This will undoubtedly make the
band active even if conditions are not good.
For us in the UK it’s a holiday weekend so there are few if any
excuses not to operate. ‘TUT is taking this excuse thing a bit too
far. He’s even had a pacemaker fitted so he’s not allowed
to throw large amounts of RF around. If he did, maybe that would make
him move about a bit faster.
Planets:
As I said before, Tuesday was great weather and this extended into the
evening.
We had guests round and they were asking about “that bright star”
which was Venus and a planet not a star. Very few other stars/planets
were visible and the moon was bright.
The one guest noticed one close-ish to the moon. One look told me, even
with the naked eye, that it was Saturn. So I got out my telescope and
treated the guests to shots of the moon with its craters and mountains
and Saturn with its rings.
This is exactly what I saw but this photo was taken by Hanno Falk in
Germany.
