Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
01 May , 2008

Well, I’m back from a short holiday in the Canary Islands. And hot it was too, 30ºC mostly but peaking 39 at one point. Good weather for lager and lime or gin and tonic, but absolutely no amateur radio activity (on 2m or 70cm) at all.

10m was not too good whilst I was away, so my records show, with the usual exception of the weekend. Not unexpectedly 5U5U comes out top with just about everyone wanting to work them on all bands!!

Adrian, G4LED, wanted to know if the scrolling data (now a popup) is current data and the answer is yes its live and up to the moment.

Mike, N5TYW, reported TI2ERS at 5/5 but also said he had been stronger earlier. Band was up and down.

Mike, KE5GBC, heard W5SUN at 2/2 but also says,
I believe I hear guys talking in South America occasionally on 28.400.
I would like to believe that I could but I can’t.

Justin, G0KSC, was obviously on at the right time on Saturday. “Worked 5U5U, SP6KEP, S51GL, UT5DA. He comments, “A good first full E day. The day started with an opening to Swedish beacons. Then Poland then everything opened!”

And here it is, a first contact announcement.
Dave, 2E0BHQ, worked HA5AWT (28.4775MHz) and S51GL (28.4840MHz). Absolutely genuine quote,
“These were my first ham radio contacts I have ever made, I forgot to make note of signal strengths approx 57...using approximately 40 watts with 5/8 wave vertical about 16 foot above ground to base aerial (RG213)”

Congrats to you Dave (yet another Dave!) and do keep reporting in here.

Our regular Dave, VK5MRD has excuses for missing Saturday and Sunday’s opening,
“I still have a bad dose of the flu and lost my voice yesterday.  No time for the radio today however I did just hear the KH6AP Bcn 28.209.0MHz 5/9. It was very strong into PF95..”
OK, we’ll let you off this time, next time we want a note from your Mum to prove it.

Contests: 10-10 International CW and Digi contest. Saturday 00:00 to Sunday 24:00. Portuguese Navy day 15:00 Saturday to 15:00 Sunday. ARI (Italian) DX Contest, 20:00 Saturday to 20:00 Sunday and one or two other sundry “sprints” and “parties”

Sun: Blank again. But no matter how blank it looks from a distance it’s still whirling and swirling.

Everywhere you look, something is happening. Along the horizon, flame-like prominences taller than Earth itself wave hypnotically.

The stellar surface looks like a shag carpet; each strand is a Texas-sized jet of gas shooting up from the inferno below. At the right edge of the image floats a sinuous cloud of solar hydrogen held aloft by dynamic magnetic forces. At centre stage is a bright patch of magnetism that just a few days ago became unstable and exploded, sending a "solar tsunami" shock wave through the sun's atmosphere. [Space weather]
