Tony's 10 Metre Band Report
21 May, 2008

What a strange week. Monday and Sunday magnificent, the rest of the week insignificant.

I always rant on about the weekend operators because most activity seems to be on Saturday and Sunday. However my theory is dashed on the rocks by this week’s list. Saturday and Sunday were like chalk and cheese.

Rudy, PD5SS, sent in a report just too late for last week's article. Never mind here it is.
“Saturday worked: 4Z5LA 5/9, CN8SG 5/9+10, TR8CA 5/5. Heard: 4Z5IX 5/7. And worked mainly East and South Europe on Sporadic E and as usual G0FWX on ground wave condx. Tuesday worked RU9CYN 5/7. Thursday G0FWX 5/6 groundwave, worked Gary again on groundwave / tropo. Distance is a bit over 260 KM. Ant. heading is 290 deg. He was heard on Back-scatter yesterday also. Ant. heading 60 deg. Friday G0FWX again as usual.Saturday worked PY2DU 5/9 , PU2TRK 5/7, PY2VA 5/9+10, PU2UEO 5/9, PY2SRB 5/9.Sunday worked TA1CM 5/9 7X4AN 5/5 M0TBF 5/5 back-scatter HZ1PS.”
Quite a good list from Rudy although he doesn’t seem to indicate that Sunday was all that good.

Mike, KE5GBC, managed just one station on Wednesday, N4IJJ 5/9. Monday last He worked KD8ID 5/5 and heard W0MRM. He comments, “Last 3 evenings hearing something. Hope it keeps up. This time hearing stations to the north. KD8ID said it was a welcome treat to hear us in the south. Of course his 6 el beam at 80 feet didn’t hurt either.”
Just a show-off, Mike, we wire antenna guys have to stick together!

Lee, M0HOK, is another wire antenna bloke. On Tuesday he managed F5RDK 5/7at 14.55 UTC, OE2008U 5/7(SPECIAL) AT 16.20 UTC and OE2008A 5/9(SPECIAL) AT 16.35 UT. He says,
“Nice opening and I did OK considering my half sized G5RV is only at eaves height. There was a fair bit of rapid QSB and I didn't hear anything spectacular with my basic antenna but I enjoyed it.”
And that surely is what it is all about.

Mike, KC2FTN, says,
“I worked K4RIX, KI4VLZ, AB0HF, KG4OYR, K0RDK, N0XES, WB9QVR, KD6ZR, W4OCO, W4KVW and WZ0O.Many other contacts were made here in the States as well. I'm glad to see that 10 meters is FINALLY open!”

Finally our other Dave, 2E0BHQ, managed just one contact on Sunday, IZ5NFD 28.4900MHz 13.15 UTC. Which is one more than I had despite the apparently good propagation that day.

Contests: This weekend is CW weekend!! It’s the CQ WW WPX CW Contest 00:00 Saturday to 24:00 Sunday. All we can hope for is some spin off into the phone sections.

Sun: There are a couple of very small sun spots 994 and 996 (what about 995?) but they are insignificant.

NASA astronomers have been watching the Moon to see how often meteoroids crash into the lunar surface and they've just video-recorded their 100th explosion. The best time to see crashes onto the moon is at a new moon when most of the moon is dark, then the tiny explosions can be easily seen, done it myself.
