To the layman, an antenna is merely a length of wire, strung-out in any old fashion. However, the reality is that this is far from the case. Antenna theory is as vast and complex as any other aspect of amateur radio. In fact, judging by the mass of books and articles dedicated to just this one subject alone, it may actually be more so.

Constructing your own antennas can be one of the most rewarding aspects of amateur radio, especially when you find that your 50 pence home-brew wire antenna is matching, or even outperforming the commercially-made antennas that your fellow hams have spent a small fortune acquiring.

However, we all need help and advice at some stage, and having somebody knowledgeable on the subject can be of immense help. One person whose expert advice you can now call on is Andy Foad, G0FTD.
