Congratulations to amateur radio operator Kathie Cross, VA7KTH

Kathie Cross is a Family Councilor at Central Middle School, School District 61, Victoria, BC.

Kathie has been working closely with the West Coast Amateur Radio Association (WARA) in developing and facilitating a twice-yearly 10-week Enhancement Program module which is also part of the Radio Amateurs of Canada Youth Education Program (YEP).

The objectives are
- to introduce the students to Community Service using the Amateur Radio Service (HAM);
- to interest middle school students in pursuing careers in science and technology;
- and to offer students (particularly those "at risk") an opportunity to express themselves through a media which is a great equalizer -- the person at the other end of the conversation only knows the student by voice.

Kathie is particularly committed to offering students at risk an opportunity to express themselves. She decided to study for her Amateur Radio Certification, and enrolled in WARA's four-month certification course. This is a very extensive curriculum, involving two 2-hour evenings a week as well as several Saturday 'hands-on' sessions. Kathie scored in the 90's in her Basic Exam; and then went on to pass her Morse Code! Her new call sign is VA7KTH.

Congratulations Kathie. I am certain School District 61 is very proud of it's very talented staff member.
