STAR-B-Q an outstanding success

The Summerland Amateur Radio Club's Astronomy Day turned out to be a ripper of an event.

Although the day started with overcast weather which didn't look too good in the morning, as the day progressed, it got clearer to give a fine clear sky for the evening viewing.

About 25 attended the explanation / display given by Chris VK2LCD and Kris VK2MRN at the clubrooms in Lismore, New South Wales.

They gave an excellent PowerPoint and visual presentation with literature and reference manual. A talk-through of what we might see at night. Congratulations and thanks to them for the time and effort put into this.

Kris VK2MRN takes aim

Several telescopes etc were on hand for examination and demo. Most then moved to Graeme VK2JUB's QTH for the evening festivities. This is an excellent hilltop site, relatively free of interfering trees and nuisance lighting in built up areas. Good BBQ shed available too.

About 30 of us enjoyed the BBQ and the evening viewing.
Jupiter's moons and the rings of Saturn were the main attractions. All were seen on all the telescopes and binos we had set up.

All agreed, we must do it again when the celestial weather is favourable. Thanks JUB for the site and all involved in an excellent event.

John, VK2JWA
