WIA Participation in Standards Australia

The WIA has been represented on various Standards committees by the late Peter Naish, VK2BPN, Gilbert Hughes, VK1GH and David Wardlaw, VK3ADW.

But what is "Standards Australia?"

VK3ADW David Wardlaw gives us an insight.

"Standards have been around for a long time. From the earliest societies to the present day, there have been physical standards for weight and measure - a single reference point against which all other weights and measures in a society can be checked. As writing developed, written standards evolved, which set down mutually agreed standards for products and services.

Standards Australia international Ltd is an independent company trading under the name of Standards Australia, whose principal activity is the development of Australia's standards.

Australian standards are recognised as being authoritative documents. They also have wide legislative acceptance in all States and Territories in Australia, with an increasing legislative acceptance by the Federal government.

The development of standards is done through the work of technical committees. The content of a standard is the responsible of its technical committee.

Before a standard is finally approved it goes out for public comment.

Technical committees are constituted so that all sectors having a significant interest in the project are represented on the committee.

The WIA is represented on the technical committees dealing Radio Communications, EMR and EMC. The importance of these committees to amateur radio is that standards developed by them are being taken up by the ACA and
made mandatory.

Currently one of the places BPL is being examined is in Committee TE3 of Standards Australia the EMC committee. This is of vital interest to amateurs".

The WIA Board has appointed John Bishop, VK2ZOI as the Sydney representative, with Gilbert Hughes continuing as the Canberra representative and David Wardlaw as Melbourne representative and coordinator of the group
