SU8DRM at ITU Conference on Disaster Relief and ManagementThe ITU Regional Joint Conference on Disaster Relief and Management – International Cooperation & Role of ICT was held from 14-17 April 2007 in Alexandra, Egypt. With the primary objective of promoting awareness of the important role and capabilities that amateur radio has in disaster relief communications, the Egyptian Amateur Radio Assembly (EARA) activated SU8DRM during the conference. The achievements of the operation include: • Two papers were presented in the official proceedings: • Amateur Radio as a First Aid and Tool of Emergency Communications, OH1VR • Amateur Radio Communications in Disaster Relief, DL1BDF and SU1SK • Over 1000 on the air radio contacts (QSOs) were made on the 20 meter and 40 meter amateur bands, demonstrating amateur operations to the conference participants. • The operation was well received; many interested conference delegates were introduced to Amateur Radio and the important capabilities it offers in disaster relief situations. • Discussions with delegates from Egypt, Djibouti, Comoros, and others were conducted, with the intention to further develop amateur radio as an emergency communications resource in the region. Next steps: EARA will participate in the 5 May 2007 IARU Region I EmCom “Second Party on the Air” exercise, call sign SU0ARA. Follow up discussions and meetings with interested delegates in the region, including Egypt, Djibouti, Comoros, and others are being organized. Because we discovered the need to increase general awareness of the important role amateur radio can play in disaster relief, an educational workshop for Amateur Radio, with a focus on emergency communications, is being planned especially for interested parties in the region as well as for interested parties in other Region 1 countries. We have preliminary agreement for cooperation in this event with the ITU Emergency Communications department head. Further information will be provided as plans progress.
