EADS to buy SSTL ?

A BBC report says that EADS Astrium, looks set to acquire British satellite manufacturer Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL).

SSTL started as a spin-out from the University of Surrey in 1985. It has become the world's leading manufacturer of small satellites, producing low-cost platforms for Earth observation missions.

The first satellite built by the university was UoSAT-1 (OSCAR 9) launched in 1981. The next satellite UoSAT-2 (OSCAR-11), launched in 1984, is still sending out signals 24 years later on 145.825 MHz - a tribute to the high quality of it's design and construction.

SSTL also built Giove-A, the first test satellite for Europe's forthcoming Galileo satellite-navigation service.
