IMD at Sandford Mill Radio Museum

International Marconi Day (IMD) celebrating Marconi's birthday takes place on Saturday 26 th April and is the first open day of the year for the Sandford Mill Radio Museum in Chelmsford, Essex.

The Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) has the great privilege of setting up one of their stations, using the callsign GX0MWT, in the famous Writtle Hut now housed in the museum. It was used for some of the first wireless broadcasts by 2MT in the early 1920's.

This year CARS plan to run two HF stations and a VHF station from the museum site. CARS members will start operating at 9 am and the museum will be open to the general public between 10 am and 5 pm.

As well as the radio stations CARS will also be running a demonstration of automatic mechanical Morse equipment using historic equipment from early in the last century.
This demonstration run by Geoff G7KLV and Colin G0TRM is always very popular with the general public especially younger visitors.

Among the many exhibits at the museum is a typical ship's radio room with equipment donated by the family of the late Donald Imber G0VIS.
