The Shelby Hamfest dispute rumbles on

The Shelby Star has an article on the on-going dispute affecting the Shelby Hamfest.

The article by the Shelby Star's David Allen says:

Four days after Shelby Amateur Radio Club officials announced Hamfest's apparent move to Gaston County, Cleveland County commissioners have expressed concern and request something be done about it.

The county leases the property to the county fair association for $1 a year. Commissioner Eddie Holbrook said Thursday afternoon that County Manager David Dear has been asked to notify the two organizations of the commissioners' feelings and request a meeting to see if their differences can be worked out.

"The county commissioners have agreed that they're greatly concerned about losing potential travel and tourism to the county and we have expressed our concern and urgency of the matter," Commissioner Eddie Holbrook said Thursday. "We have instructed the county manager to notify the fair association board and president and the Hamfest officials of our concern."

Holbrook said the county commissioners have requested the two parties, along with Chair Jo Boggs, meet as soon as possible to see if common ground can be reached.

Commissioners also requested immediate notification of the meeting results, he said. No meeting date has been set.

"That's what they're talking about today," Holbrook said.

Because of contract disputes with the fair association, Hamfest officials recently announced that the event would be moving east this year to Biggerstaff Park in Dallas, also known as Gaston County Park.
