Breathing new life into classic Marconi radios

On Tuesday May 4, Peter Bridgeman, G3SUY, will give a talk 'Breathing new life into a Marconi T1154, R1155 and CR150' to the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS)

Peter will describe his experiences in renovating these old equipments and bringing them back to life and operation on today’s amateur bands.

The Marconi T1154 Transmitter was discovered in a very sorry condition in a garage near Manchester. It was being used as a nest box by the local wildlife after being discarded many years ago. Likewise, the R1155 had few components remaining after languishing for years in a shack “graveyard”.

Peter will describe the how components were repaired together with the simple techniques he used to restore front panels using everyday materials. He will also describe the changes made to the equipment to upgrade performance to make it better suited for use in today’s amateur bands.

Marconi 1154 and 1155 in a Lancaster Bomber

The Marconi 1154 Transmitter and 1155 Receiver were used on the Lancaster Bombers during WWII and after his restoration they are regularly used for AM and CW on the 160 and 80 metre bands and also sometimes demonstrated at the Flixton Air Museum.

Peter also rebuilt a Marconi CR150 which CARS Member, Geoff Lovegrove, G7KLV, was involved in designing many years ago.

Come to CARS Meeting and hear this intriguing story first hand.

The talk takes place on Tuesday May 4 at the Marconi Social Club (MASC), Beehive Lane, Great Baddow, Chelmsford, CM2 9RX. The doors open at 7:10 pm and the meeting gets underway at 7:30 pm. Admittance and car parking are free and a bar is available for refreshments.

An apartment block has been built near the entrance. Look for the large "Salsa" advertisement which shows the turning for the car park.
