Broadband via balloons experiment in Sweden

The Swedish space base Esrange is testing a new method to provide broadband to rural areas, using balloons.

Located outside Kiruna, above the Arctic Circle, Esrange has long experience in using large balloons to lift heavy payloads for atmospheric and low space experiments.

The 7 million dollar broadband project, called Capanina, is funded by the European Union, and is being run by York University in Britain. Initial tests were conducted in Britain last year.

The technology is seen both as a permanent means to deliver broadband to rural regions, as well as a temporary solution after natural disasters
