Peter 1 Island (Antarctica) Dxpedition

There's a very important event coming up in the near future that needs the support of the Amateur Radio community.

For the DX'ers among us, the 3Y0X DXpedition to Peter
I Island presents the opportunity to snag a very rare DX contact. You'll find a note on their web page that states "more people have flown in outer space than have set foot on Peter I Island."

The DXpedition is scheduled for early 2006.

This remote place off the coast of Antarctica has been the home to two previous DXpeditions in 1987 and 1995. The logistics and planning necessary to mount such a trip are very daunting. So are the costs. DXpeditions such as this one benefit more than just hams interested in getting a great QSL card.

Equipment must be selected with care: weight and size must be minimized. Equipment must be set up and operated in harsh winter conditions. Success in the Peter I DXpedition will be a benefit to Amateur Radio across many disciplines including DXing, Contesting, Emergency Services, Science and Education, International good-will and the casting of Amateur Radio in a good light to the public at large.

How can you help?

You can support the DXpedition directly. Go to their web page at http://www.peterone.com/ and browse around. There's a link that will allow you to provide direct financial support. It should be noted that the Mile High DX
Association has already signed on as a sponsoring organization and will be listed on the 3Y0X QSL. Other Colorado clubs may wish to discuss providing support.

You can also support one of the individuals who has been invited to participate. Don DuBon, N6JRL is a Colorado 'adopted' son. Don currently lives in a suburb of Dayton, OH. His brother, Cliff, N0ZUQ lives in Fort Collins and his mother, Dottie, KB0SHJ lives in Colorado Springs. Don briefly lived in Colorado a few years ago - but his Colorado "connection" remains.

Don and his wife have hosted many Coloradoans in their home each year for the past decade during the weekend of the Dayton Hamvention. Food and shelter have been
provided for up to a dozen Colorado hams a few days each year and he has never asked for a penny. Don has participated in Field Day here in Colorado a few times over the years as well as helping out with the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

In order to participate in the DXpedition, he needs to raise nearly $10,000. to cover his personal expenses to include transportation. That's only $10.00 from 1,000 people and he's on his way!! If a club or other organization would care
to make a more substantial donation, Don has promised he will attend that club's meeting or other function after the DXpedition and present a program on the 3Y0X operation.
If you can support Don, please send your donation to:

Don DuBon, N6JRL
441 Lewiston RD
Kettering, OH 45429

Please include a notation that the donation is for the 3Y0X DXpedition. It is also important to include a return address: If the $10,000. goal isn't met by mid November, all donations will be returned.

I'd appreciate it if the various clubs throughout the section would run this article in their newsletter.

Help if you can !

Thanks es 73,
