Swedish submarine on-air

Listen out NOW, August 20 to 25 for a most exciting operation. It's SL8SUB, on the air from aboard Submarine HMS Uppland, one of the most modern Swedish submarines in the so called Gotland class. But get this: don't just expect to work them dockside, for the final three days of the operation it will actually be fully operational, working the amateur bands maritime mobile out at sea! Our press release dryly reports that we should only expect to actually hear the operators at those times when the sub is not actually submerged. I guess it won't be a triband beam in use, either...

This absolutely remarkable and totally unique operation is
going to air in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the
Swedish Submarine service. HMS Uppland hit the amateur
bands last Friday from its normal berth in Stockholm, the
capital of Sweden, from which it is still working, but
tomorrow, Monday the 23rd, HMS Uppland will be
seabound as SL8SUB/MM, starting its mission from
Stockholm.

At all times when not submerged, there will be amateur
radio transmissions from the ship on HF bands. Listen to
transmissions on Sunday August the 22nd for this is the
very first time in the world there are Ham Radio onboard
an active, operative submarine, especially one seabound as
Maritime Mobile!
