year old ex-BEA Radio Officer gets Foundation Licence
Alex M0DWA, who was formerly M3HSK, had a fascinating CW QSO with Les
M3HDT on 80 metres a few days ago.
Les got his foundation licence at the age of 91. Before that he was well
known for the talk he gives to clubs on his days as a Telegraphist Air
Gunner (TAG) in WWII. See bottom of the page at

Les did the Foundation Course at the Colchester
Radio Club and members of HARIG
(Harwich Amateur Radio Interest Group) recently helped him by erecting
an 80m Dipole.

I returned today after a busy few days and decided to "fire up"
the HF radio at home.
I put out a call on 3.520 MHz (CW mode) and rcvd a call back from M3HDT
??????????? !!!!!!!!
The QSO went something like this:

5nn/5nn here Les QTH Colchester ok tks ere my first tks k
tks I am 91yrs have come back to cw after being a flt radio officer with
BEA.
tks for your interest I am taking a long time to get back my old style
"
I asked how many years he had been with BEA and to confirm that he was
91 years old, he did that!!! 91 years old and coming back to CW, wow!
then:>
"M0DWA de M3HDT tks I was with BEA for 34yrs of those years 10 years
were as radio officer before that was with RN fleet air arm ok "
I asked about his weather after giving my local wx report>

We then signed off with each other.
What a FANTASTIC chap eh ??? 91 years old and just coming back to CW
and was sending very readable code...
I doubt if I'll reach 91, let alone be able to send CW !!!
I'm now feeling a very happy chappy to have made 1st QSO with this guy,
better than all the DX put together over the last... :-)
