Antwerp in Belgium is this year's port of arrival for the Tall Ships races - the 50th anniversary of this great event.
Tall Ships are large sailing ships.

The Antwerp amateur radio enthusiasts of the UBA department OSA-Antwerp will also be present at this massive event.

They will be operating a special event station from onboard the Antwerp museum lightship Westhinder3 using the special call ON9BD.  The station will be operational from 19 to 22 August on all HF bands and 2 meters in CW and SSB.

The Museum ship and the ham radio shack on board are free to visit daily from 10 up to 17 hours (Saint Laureiskaai-Bonapartdok) in Antwerp Belgium.

History

Amerigo Vespucci and Sagres on the Parade of Sail

The Tall Ships’ Races has now existed for half a century. It was in 1956 that 20 ships from 10 countries first set sail with hundreds of young people on board, from Torbay on the South coast of England to Lisbon. Thanks to the great success of this first competition the Tall Ships’ Races became an annual event, and in subsequent years they have become ever more popular.

In the Tall Ships’ Races, sailing ships of various sizes from large to small race against one another in friendly competition. Youngsters from all over the world are able to experience the physical and emotional challenges of a major sailing race while getting to know people of a similar age from different countries and backgrounds.
