Endeavour undergoes heat shield inspection
Pilot Charles Hobaugh, and mission specialists Tracy Caldwell and Rick
Mastracchio, KC5ZTE, used the shuttle’s robotic arm and the Orbiter
Boom Sensor System (OBSS) to take an extensive and detailed look at the
orbiter’s thermal protection system. Mission specialists Dave Williams
and Barbara Morgan, KD5VNP, joined Mastracchio for the latter part of
the survey.
Morgan is the mission's Educator Astronaut. She was selected for the
astronaut corps 22 years after first being selected as Christa McAuliffe's
backup in the Teacher in Space Project. McAuliffe and the rest of the
seven-member crew were killed when the space shuttle Challenger exploded
on take-off in 1986.
While in space, Morgan plans to answer questions from schoolchildren.
Barbara gained her Amateur Radio license and callsign, KD5VNP, back in
March of 2003.
The crew of the space shuttle Endeavour was awakened for its first full
day in orbit at 8:37 a.m. EDT by the song “Where My Heart Will Take
Me,” performed by Russell Watson. It was played for Mission Specialist
Rick Mastracchio.
In preparation for Endeavour’s rendezvous and docking with the
space station, crew members installed a centerline camera. It will help
Commander Scott Kelly pilot the orbiter during its approach to the station
docking port.
Crew members also checked out rendezvous tools and extended the Orbiter
Docking System ring. Endeavour is scheduled to dock at 1:53 p.m. Friday.
