The ARRL recently announced their intention to combat declining Amateur numbers in the USA.

At http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2007/07/30/100/?nc=1 under Committee Reports, the ARRL Board set a goal of attaining 30,000 new licensees in 2008, increasing in the following years.

Now the USA has 5 times the population of the UK so an equivalent target scaled for the UK would be 6,000 a year. We are currently acheiving about 1,600 new Amateurs each year.
