UK Amateur Radio Licences as at 31st July 2008The UK regulator Ofcom has supplied the figures for the total number of Amateur Radio Licences issued as at 31st July 2008 Change since last month
Change since last year
The number of new Foundation holders shows the lowest monthly increase on record. The number of newcomers coming into the hobby has been steadily declining for the past 4 years. The increase in the number of Full/Advanced licence holders over the year is surprising. The Annual Report of the RCE Standards Committee shows that only 161 people passed the Advanced in 2007, yet the 2007 increase in Full/Advanced licences considerably exceeded that. What we may be seeing here is that previous holders of expired Class B Amateur licences have been renewing or taking up new callsigns. The Class B’s passed the equivalent of today’s Advanced exam but used to be restricted to VHF/UHF/uW operation only and large numbers of them dropped out of the hobby, however, since the Morse requirement for HF operating was removed in 2003 many have shown a renewed interest in Amateur Radio.
