Ofcom 917-921 MHz and 872-876 MHz ConsultationOn Wednesday the UK regulator Ofcom published a further consultation on the potential uses for the 872-876 MHz paired with the 917-921 MHz band. The document considers the different licensing options and potential uses for the spectrum. It also considers the need to protect existing and new services in adjacent spectrum bands. Under consideration is the possible use of 917-921 MHz for RFID. At the present time there is no common Global licence exempt sprectrum available between 42 MHz and 2.4 GHz. RFID and a wide range of electronic products are global in nature and it makes sense for one common frequency allocation to be made available for them. Allocating 917-921 MHz for RFID and short range devices would fit in with the existing situation in much of the world and could lead to a true global standard which would benefit us all. Currently the British Isles and Europe have put RFID and SRD's on 433/434 MHz, these frequencies are completely unsuitable for such applications and cause significant problems. The consultation, which closes on 3 November 2009, can be found here Consultation PDF The previous consultation can be found here ETSI TR 102 649-2 - Proposal for high performance RFID interrogators and SRDs at 915-921 MHz - is available as a free download from the ETSI website see: ETSI Standards available as free downloads
