Amateur Radio set to steal the show

The UK's Plymouth Herald newspaper recently reported that the city's amateur radio club is likely to be the 'star attraction' at this wekend's Lighthouse celebration.

Lighthouse at centre of celebrations

A DAY of family activities is planned for The Hoe as the city of Plymouth in the UK, celebrates International Lighthouse Day.

The historic Smeaton's Tower will play host to storytelling, crafts, a quiz and a host of other activities next Saturday, August 15.

Staff from Lighthouse Learning will be on hand to answer any questions, while families will have the chance to make badges, tokens and even their very own lighthouses.

An '18th century lighthouse keeper' will be telling stories, while a kids can compete in a themed quiz and wordsearch.

But the stars of the show are set to be Plymouth Amateur Radio Club, which will be broadcasting to lighthouses across the globe as part of the celebrations. They will take up residence in Smeaton Tower's lantern room for three days, working in shifts to keep the city on the airwaves.

Built in 1759, Smeaton's Tower used to sit on the Eddystone Reef and will be 250 years old this year.
