Sandford Mill Radio Museum on-the-air in August
Each Sunday during August the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) are running an Amateur Radio station GX0MWT from the Sandford Mill Science and Industrial museum that is home to an extensive collection of historic radio equipment.
The first event took place on Sunday 2nd August and attracted coverage in the local Essex Chronicle newspaper which featured a picture of Patrick M0XAP and Martyn G1EFL operating the club station.
Three key modern technologies - telecommunications, electrical engineering and rolling bearings - were pioneered by the Chelmsford based firms Marconi, Crompton and Hoffmann. This gives Chelmsford a unique place in the story of technology and is commemorated at Sandford Mill.
Many fascinating radio exhibits are displayed there. These include spark transmitters from the late 1890's right through to some very high power commercial transmitters from the 1960's.
There is also a good selection of Valves and early Television Broadcast Cameras. Recent additions include a fully equipped Ships Radio Room and the collection of Marconi and other Marine Radio equipment donated by the late Donald Imber G0VIS
Sandford Mill is run with the help of the Friends of Chelmsford Museums and other ex-industry volunteers. It relies on the support of several voluntary bodies including Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society, the Radio Officers' Association, the Marconi Veterans Association and the The Susan Trust. Susan is the last wooden Chelmer Barge and is moored at Sandford Mill.
The museum is open to the public between 2pm and 5pm on Sunday 9th, 16th, 23rd August.
