TV news report on Chinese radio hams
A TV news item from 2009 gives an insight into Amateur Radio in China.
The description of the Reuters news item says:
Armed with their antennas, transmitters and receivers, Chinese amateur radio operators gather to send out Morse code signals and encoded messages in the hope of getting a response from near or far. For radio enthusiasts at the Beijing Sunny Radio Club, a perfect weekend means getting of town, surfing the frequencies and finding other radio fanatics in other cities, or even continents, to talk to.
Out of the world's three million amateur radio operators about 80,000-90,000 are in China, according to the Chinese Radio Sports Association, which oversees licensing for hobbyists in the world's most populous country. The number has been steadily growing in recent years, the association said, despite a huge increase in access to mobile phones and the Internet in the country.
