UK 3G licence holder may sue

The Times newspaper has reported that 3 UK is considering legal action against UK Telecom Body Ofcom.

Ofcom has indicated that it could relax previously set 3G UMTS roll out mandatory targets.

In year 2000, 3 UK paid £1,000,000 through an auction process for its 3G Licence and could now be seeking compensation. 3 UK has hit Ofcom's roll out criteria of 80% roll out coverage by 2007.

3 UK see any relaxation as giving its competitors (Orange, Vodafone, mm02 and T-Mobile) a financial advantage as less immediate cost would be incurred.

T-Mobile and mm02 will not launch their 3G networks until well into 2005.
