ACA to release new
radiofrequency spectrum plan
A new plan that will allow greater sharing of spectrum among users will
be released by the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) on 1 January
2005.
The 2005 Australian Radiofrequency Spectrum Plan divides the spectrum
into frequency bands and also provides radiocommunication users with information
about the types of services allocated to each band.
Services that will benefit from the new plan include amateur, radiolocation,
aeronautical radionavigation and aeronautical mobile services," ACA
Acting Chairman Dr Bob Horton said.
Radio local area networks, also known as wireless local area networks,
in the 5 GHz band will also benefit from the updated plan.
The new plan is based on the spectrum arrangements developed by the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) to incorporate changes made to international
frequency allocations at the 2003 ITU World Radiocommunication Conference.
These changes, which come into international effect on 1 January
2005, will provide increased spectrum for many services including the
mobile and mobile satellite services, space research services, radio-navigation
satellite services and Earth exploration services, Dr Horton said.
Some minor changes have been made to reflect domestic circumstances,
but these are mainly associated with spectrum arrangements for defence,
he added.
Copies of the 2005 Australian Radiofrequency Spectrum Plan and information
about the changes will be available on the ACA website at www.aca.gov.au
from 4 January 2005. The plan can be purchased from ACA regional offices
from that date.
