www.amateur radio licence examsAs an experienced radio club class instructor and examiner, Ian Jackson VK3BUF has given much thought on how to streamline amateur licence examinations. Basically he's suggesting that the Internet can replace the current printed hard copy exam paper and manual marking and results system. In his report entitled "A Blueprint Proposal for Reforming Amateur
Examination Processes" he firmly believes that not only can the provision
and conduct of exams be made more efficient, but there's an opportunity
to also remove the perceived barriers, that the current system creates
for So exactly what is Ian VK3BUF proposing? The centre-point of his reform package is the establishment of an Internet site to provide on-line examinations, with an automatic marking and results facility. The site would be password protected and only accessible by authorised examiners. How would it work? Well, to stage an examination event the examiners would carry out their verification of the candidate and the exam would be monitored and recorded via a simply web cam attached to the computer's USB port. A simple pass or fail result would appear on the computer screen at
the end of the exam. If the candidate is successful they would then be
able to chose a callsign from a database, pay a licence fee, and leave
the exam centre What Ian VK3BUF is proposing draws on readily available technology. Online examinations could make exams more readily available, and promise cost savings in relation to the provision of exams. Food for thought to say the least, a proposal worthy of further consideration. Ian Jackson can be contacted via email ianjackson@dcsi.net.au
