Battle of Blaauwberg Special Event
Station
The Adventure Radio Club of Cape Town will field a special event
station on 7 and 8 January 2006 during the
bi-centennial commemoration of the Battle of Blaauwberg.
The Battle of Blaauwberg took place on 8 January 1806 around the
shores of Melkbosstrand and is one of the most significant military
events in South Africa's history.
The Adventure Radio Club will transmit interviews with experts
on the Battle, from the summit of Blaauwberg Hill. Willem Steenkamp,
writer and defence correspondent will deliver an address at 10:00
CAT on 7 January on 7 050 kHz and 145,500 MHz.
There will be interviews with Willem Steenkamp, the historian Dr
Dan Sleigh and the historian and cannon expert Captain Gerry De
Vries at 08:00 CAT on 8 January on 3 650 kHz, 7 050 kHz and 145,500
MHz.
At 11:00 CAT a retransmission of the interviews will broadcast on
7 050 kHz, 14 225 kHz and 145,500 MHz.
The event will be attended by ambassadors and military attachés
of Great Britain, France, the Netherlands and Indonesia, who all
had soldiers and civilians fighting in the Battle. A reenactment
of the Battle and the firing of actual Napoleonic era cannons will
take place and be a treat for the public.
