New 'Colchester Challenge' award scheme
Colchester Radio Amateurs Club has launched a new awards scheme
aimed at encouraging greater activity on 145MHz.
The Colchester Challenge – as the scheme has been called
– is open to fixed stations only on 2m FM.
It is different to most amateur radio awards in that participants
don't get rewarded for total number of QSOs but the total distance
of QSOs. Amateurs will receive a certificate once they have made
5,000km of QSOs.
This certificate will then be updated with stickers when they achieve
25,000, 50,000, 100,000, 250,000 and 500,000km of QSOs. Finally,
a special certificate will be provided to anyone who achieves one
million km.
Colchester Radio Amateurs chairman James McGinty, M0ZZO, came up
with the idea for the scheme after struggling to make many contacts
on 2m FM. He said:
"This band is fantastic when you are north of Birmingham.
But head anywhere south of the M4 corridor and 2m FM becomes nigh
on impossible. I realised something needed to be done to get more
people on 145MHz and so the Colchester Challenge was born."
Further detail about the challenge can be found on James's website
