HAM radio for disaster managementIn a unique initiative, the Bengal Amateur Radio Society will organise an awareness camp on HAM radio - a uniform frequency connecting all amateur radio operators across the world - at a fair to be held at Panihati from December 24 to January 1. It's the first time that HAM radio operators will be interacting directly with the general public on the issue of disaster management. “The idea is to put across the message to the public on the ways in which the HAM radio can help them tackle any disaster. We want to familiarise the general public with the concept of HAM radio,” said Ambarish Biswas, a HAM radio operator. Around 15 members of the 200 member strong Bengal Amateur Radio Society will give demonstrations on the usage of HAM. “We have already sought the permission of the Wireless Planning Commission (WPC) of the Union ministry of telecommunications,” said Biswas. The society will have arrangements to install HAM radio set-ups with high frequency, very high frequency and ultra high frequency wireless sets. There will be live demonstrations on the operations of HAM radios. The HAM SAT, a satellite made by ISRO, will be on display at the fair. There will also be exhibits of equipment used for HAM radio operations. Visitors can also get information on how they can obtain their HAM licence, the criteria to be an amateur radio operator and the cost involved.
