Raynet
take part in tunnel exercise
Members of North Wiltshire Raynet and Gwent Raynet
took part in an exercise at Box Railway Tunnel in Wiltshire, on 26 November.
The exercise, undertaken with Network Rail and the Wiltshire Fire and
Rescue Service, tested radio communications the full length of the 1.5
mile straight tunnel.
Communication links were tested over the top of Box Hill as well as through
it. External links were also tested to the Avon Fire & Rescue Service
command HQ at Lansdowne with the help of Bath & North East Somerset
Raynet.
The 2m band was used for the external, over-ground links, while 70cm
and 23cm were used in the tunnel itself. While 70cm worked well through
the tunnel, the tests showed that 23cm was by far the most reliable, backing
up results from previous studies.
