Setting the Standard(s)

The WIA's Phil Waite VK2DKN explains the work of The Wireless Institute of Australia on the Standards Australia Committee

"I thought it might be useful to talk about something the WIA does which is pretty much kept in the background. That's our work on various Standards Australia committees.

The WIA is represented on several Australian Standards committees involved in radiocommunications, lectromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic immunity, and radiation safety.

Recently we have also been very active in a BPL working group which is attempting to develop recommendations for the measurement of emissions from BPL equipment and power lines. This working group is attended by BPL equipment manufacturers, EMC experts, ACMA, Telco's,
Broadcasters and we radio amateurs.

In a recent meeting in Melbourne we demonstrated a new technique for measuring BPL emissions. The FSM technique was developed by Owen Duffy, VK1OD, and the ARRL's Ed Hare, W1RFI.

The BPL working group within Standards Australia is a powerful opportunity for us to present our case for lower emission level standards for BPL.

Our Standards work in general is yet another way the WIA represents the interests of you, its members. It is a valuable opportunity for us to influence the outcome of standards to accommodate the needs of radio amateurs

The Standards work continues with meetings every month or two. It's a very important part of what the WIA does for Australian radio amateurs.
