Radio Hams help Bangladesh cyclone victims

Three members of Bangladesh Amateur Radio League - BARL helped Super Cyclone SIDR affected people.

Team members were Dr. Zahid Shipon S21VA, Engr. Belayet Robin S21RB and Mohammad Alam 21AK.

As all of you may know on 15th of November 2007 a category 5 cyclone SIDR hit south part of Bangladesh.

A total of 5,000 people died and more then 50,000 become homeless.

With the limited resource of BARL we helped the victims in different way. Recently three BARL members, including me, helped a big medical team by Amateur Radio.

Three medical team working in different cyclone affected area. There was no electricity and cell phone coverage. We helped them to keep communication between doctors on patient treatment and proper medication.

We used HF transceiver powered by a 12 Volt battery and a simple dipole antenna. It took 10 minutes to setup each station for us. We operated in 40mtr band and 2mtr for local contact.

Hope this news and our practical experience will help other HAMS to come forward and work in disaster.

Thanks and 73
