The 'commercial broadcasters' of shortwave“A portable shortwave radio opens a universe of new experiences. There’s a thrill in exploring the large commercial broadcasters that beam news, music and drama to anyone who cares to listen.” That’s what readers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution are told by techno columnist Bill Huxted, who from his photo appears old enough to remember the days of WNYW, Radio New York Worldwide. To be fair, Mr Huxted does go on to recommend Passport to World Band Radio, but his mention of “large commercial broadcasters” that supposedly beam programmes to North America on shortwave does make me wonder whether he has actually read it!
