Jack Binns CQD centenary in Monitoring Monthly magazine
The January 2009 issue of the Radio and Communications magazine Monitoring Monthly, now on sale, features an article by CARS Chairman John Bowen C.Eng. MIET G8DET on the centenary of the sinking of the RMS Republic and the first use of CQD by wireless.
The Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society (CARS) are taking part in the commemoration of this event by running a special event station GB0MWT at the Sandford Mill Radio Museum from 23rd to 25th January.
John's article appears on pages 28 and 29 of MM and in it he tells of the sinking of the RMS Republic and the first use by wireless of the CQD distress call by the ships Radio Officer Jack Binns which resulted in over 1500 lives being saved.
John also describes how in 1914 former CARS President Ron Ferguson OBE G4VF, then Chief Radio Officer of the Empress of Ireland, made use of the subsequent distress call SOS when that ship sank in the St Lawrence river in Canada.
In addition to the Special Event Station GB0MWT the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society will also have a talk on Jack Binns at their next meeting on Tuesday 6th January, full details at http://www.g0mwt.org.uk/
