Motorola demonstrates new e-Call technology
Critical accident data can be sent to a public emergency call centre within
seconds
Motorola is showcasing how its technology can transmit important accident
data - such as the exact location of the car - to authorities to help
facilitate an emergency response. Motorola will demonstrate its technology
at its stand, A21 in Hall 1, during the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes.
Motorola is actively engaged in the e-Call initiative, which is focused
on developing a standard, non-subscription based emergency call system
for drivers across Europe.
Motorolas emergency call system technology links directly with
the vehicles electrical system. In case of an accident, the system
can be activated automatically via sensors. The system also can be activated
manually. Motorolas system transmits information via a regular mobile
communication network to an emergency call centre, which then alerts police
and rescue services to the accident scene. Motorolas technology
ensures that essential accident data is sent in parallel to the voice
connection, which provides injured persons a direct connection to rescue
services.
Like the European Commission and its supporters, Motorola believes
the e-Call initiative is of paramount importance and is committed to its
development, said Marios Zenios, Senior Vice President and General
Manager of Motorolas Automotive business. Almost 40,000 fatalities,
3.3 million injuries and annual costs of roughly 180 billion Euro can
be attributed to traffic accidents in Europe each year. With e-Call, we
can try to reduce these statistics and save precious lives.
The European Commission initiative is also supported by the European
Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), an interest group of European
automobile, bus and truck manufacturers, and ERTICO, a nonprofit organization
promoting the implementation of intelligent transportation systems and
service providers in Europe.
