RSGB provides international
Amateur Radio examination
The RSGB has been asked by several administrations outside the UK if
it would be able to continue the amateur radio examination previously
organised by City & Guilds.
Smaller countries, which did not have the resources to set up their
own exam systems, had been using the former RAE to qualify prospective
radio amateurs. After City & Guilds withdrew this exam, the Society
was seen as a suitable body to continue the qualification, because of
its experience in running the UK's examination system on behalf of Ofcom.
The first RSGB International Amateur Radio Examination (IARE) will be
held at the end of March, and it is expected that this examination will
in future take place twice a year.
The exam will take place in two countries: Kenya and Trinidad &
Tobago. About 35 students will sit the first paper, which will be marked
by the RSGB. Negotiations with the appropriate licensing authorities mean
that successful candidates will then have the necessary qualifications
to obtain an amateur radio licence in their own countries.
Other countries have said that they wish to join those who are using
this method of examining future radio amateurs, so more are expected to
join in the second examination later this year. Information on the RSGB
IARE can be obtained from HQ.
