Sky Electronic Programme Guide
fault causes frustration
The 8 million or so subscribers of Sky TV across the UK experienced fustration
recently when a fault in the Electronic Programme Guide caused widespread
problems, with viewers unable to select channels, slow switching between
channels, and missing or incorrect programme information.
The Sky technical department was inundated with calls, and was telling
callers that it had a 30 minute long queue of people trying to get through.
Sky employees received an internal email informing them that there was
a problem with the system which affected all viewers, and engineers were
investigating. After about one hour things appeared to be back to normal.
The problems got too much for one viewer who reported to one of the forums:
"After about 5 years of no problems my Sky digibox has been playing
up - the banners would mess up and I could not change channels. Had to
turn it off and on again and wait for minutes, then it would work and
mess up again.
All came to a head just now when I was watching the final over in the
cricket match between South Africa and England. It messed up a few times.
I got so angry and pulled the box out of the cabinet and stomped on it,
and for some reason I was so angry I kicked the telly which fell on the
floor and the 32" screen bust. My girlfriend got scared and left
for her parents...."
We hope the story has a happy ending.
