Microwaves? An Event for BeginnersFor most radio amateurs, the radio World stops at 146MHz (or 433MHz if you are brave) but... a whole new world of opportunity exists beyond 1GHz (1,000MHz) - these are the microwave bands. You may think that such bands have limited potential (short range) or are difficult (no commercial equipment) but that's not always the case. The microwave bands have amazing properties and the unexpected is always just around the corner. Take 10GHz (10,000MHz) for example: the current World distance record stands at over 2,000km and contacts several hundred kilometres in length are common. Even with very simple equipment (I built mine in a couple of weeks), distances of 100-200km are readily obtained - and with powers of less than 10 milliWatts (ten thousandths of a Watt)! These frequencies reflect off all manner of things so even people in poor home locations can get amazing results by reflecting their signals off nearby tall buildings - or even rain clouds! If this sounds interesting why not come along and find out more at the UK Microwave Group Workshop? This will be held on 27 May (10am-4pm) in Sheffield and will consists of talks and practical demonstrations - all aimed at complete beginners. Places will be limited to about 18 people, so you need to act now to reserve a place! Contact Peter Day G3PHO on 0114-281-6701 (microwaves@<no spam>blueyonder.co.uk) for more details. 73 Richard G3CWI
