Young hams start new VK 80m net
Has anyone noticed a new 'net' running on 80M on Wednesday evenings
lately?
The net is the 'YHN' the Young Hams Net and runs on 3.590 MHz (- QRM)
at 2000Hrs AEST.
The 'YHN' is open to any young operator, male or female and all are
welcome.
The net was started by the SRESU; the Scout Radio & Electronics Service
Unit as an organised gathering of new licensee's that had passed through
the SRESU's training program. With the introduction of the Foundation
Licence
this was quickly widened to accommodate any young operator.
As most of the YHN operators are from the Scouting Movement, the net controller
uses the Scout net control call sign of VK3SAA.
With net operators from Tasmania, Victoria, SA, NSW and soon to be in
Canberra, the word of Amateur Radio is gaining some much needed momentum.
The weekend of February 11/12 saw many of these "Young Ham's",
along with some more "Senior Operators" at another training
event.
The emphasis for this weekend was portable operation and was held at Clifford
Park Scout Camp near Wonga Park, an eastern suburb of Melbourne.
As with most training events, many things were learnt, some what to do,
some what NOT to do.
While some of the senior Operators imparted snippets of accumulated knowledge;
it became obvious that while some aspects of our hobby may still be in
decline, there are many that grow almost uncontrolled.
On Sunday morning, personal portable stations were set up for a tryout,
just in time to listen to the WIA broadcast on VK3RMM Mt Macedon. I believe
the call in afterwards gave the net controller writers cramp.
Tune in to the net.
Introduce your self.
Join in if you fit the Young category.
Support these youngsters; they are the future of the hobby.
