WRC-07 - Ofcom consultation on bands for IMT

The UK Regulator Ofcom has published a consultation on spectrum requirements for the future development of advanced mobile wireless communications systems (or IMT) which are under consideration at the 2007 World Radio Conference (WRC) of the International Telecommunications
Union (ITU).

A number of bands are considered in the consultation including 2300-2400 MHz and 3400 to 3600 MHz.
Both of these encompass existing Amateur Radio allocations. The Amateur Service has allocations from 2310-2450 MHz and 3400-3475 MHz.

The document describes the current Ofcom position as

2300-2400 MHz
On the basis of the evidence, it is not clear whether or not IMT would have greater value to society than the current uses. Taken with the limited international support for this band this leads to the conclusion that 2300 to 2400 MHz should not be a priority. Ofcom therefore proposes to adopt a neutral position regarding support for this candidate band.

3400-3600 MHz
Ofcom proposes to support the development of a European Common Proposal (ECP) for a co-primary allocation to the mobile service and identification for IMT in the bands 3400 to 3600 MHz and 3600 to 3800 MHz.

The deadline for responses to the consultation is 30 March. Anyone, regardless of country of origin, can respond to the consultation.
