Road Safety Bill - Mobile phones and driving - new penalties

On 27 February 2007 the Road Safety Act 2006 comes into force in the UK

Tthe offence of holding a mobile phone while driving has increased penalties

You must not:

• Drive holding a mobile phone
• Supervise a driver while holding a mobile phone
• Cause or permit a driver to drive while holding a mobile phone

Penalties: If you breach the law the new penalties are:

• 3 penalty points
• Fixed penalty notice fine increased to £60

Cases dealt with by the court can incur a fine of up to £1,000 or £2,500 for drivers of goods vehicles, buses or coaches.
