Two
Yaesu mobile transceivers to be won in the 2007 Construction Competition
The South African Amateur Radio Development Trust has announced details
of the 2007 Construction competition.
There two Yaesu FT-2800 M mobile 2-metre, 65
Watt Mobile transceivers to be won, sponsored by Verstay.
There are two competitions for a front-end for a Software Defined Radio.
The difference is the complexity of the design and frequency coverage.
Each competition is in two stages. Stage 1 is the design stage. Two winners
will be selected in each competition to take part in stage 2 which is
the building of a working model.
Competition 1
Design an I-Q RF Front-end (down converter) that is compatible with Software
Defined Radio programs that are available for free from the Internet e.g.
WinRad by I2PHD, Rocky by VE3NEA, Flex-Radio, etc
The RF Front-end can be fixed frequency (crystal controlled) for a single
Ham band, or operate on more than 1 band.
The RF spectrum e.g. 7,060 to 7,100 MHz, must be down converted to (stereo)
base-band (0-20 kHz) with levels and impedances compatible with the line
input of a "standard" sound card (AC97) as used on a Windows
based PC.
It must be possible to reproduce the design on vero-board (i.e. no PC-Board
required) and only freely available leaded components must be used.
Competition 2
Design an I-Q RF Front-end (down converter) that is compatible with Software
Defined Radio programs that are available for free from the Internet e.g.
WinRad by I2PHD, Rocky by VE3NEA, Flex-Radio, etc
The RF Front-end must be adjustable and cover a single Ham band, or operate
on more than 1 band. The frequency coverage must be at least 200 kHz e.g.
7,000 to 7,200 MHz. A 40 kHz segment (+- 20 kHz round the centre frequency)
must be I-Q down converted to base-band (0-20 kHz) with levels and impedances
compatible with the line input of a "standard" sound card (AC97)
as used on a Windows based PC.
It must be possible to reproduce the design on vero-board (i.e. no PC-Board
required) and only freely available leaded components must be used.
Each entry meeting the specification will be awarded a copy of the latest
Shortwave DX handbook by DL2VR valued at R230. The best two entries in
Competition 1 will each receive R500 to build a prototype. The best two
entries in competition 2 will each receive R1000 to build a prototype.
